Rutting deer

November 5th, 2017

When the two red deer clashed with their antlers there was a loud crack like a gun going off. These animals weigh in at over 200kgs each and move very quickly to engage a rival in battle. The young sika deer are only play fighting ready for the real rut when they are adults at about 5 years old. The fallow deer had a collection of jackdaws waiting to land on it to pick off ticks etc. It was a wonderful experience to be close to these wild animals as they rutted at dusk.
